What we do
Highland Museum Services Ltd is an independent museum consultancy established in 2002 and based in the Black Isle. We offer museum management and development services including training, curatorial advice, and exhibition design and production.
Recent and current projects include:
Caithness Horizons: advice on design, interpretation and museum standards for a new museum in Thurso which opened in December 2008.
James Thompson: A Highlander in Quebec: an exhibition and booklet for Tain & District Museum as part of their Year of Homecoming programme. James Thompson left Tain in 1757 to join the 78th Fraser Highlanders, fought in the major battles for Canada under General Wolfe, and stayed on in Quebec living to the age of 97 in 1830 - a remarkable story.
The Return of the Rosses: a 16 day trip for members of Clan Ross USA and Canada, also part of the Year of Homecoming. We spent 5 days in Edinburgh and attended the International Clan Gathering. The rest of the time we stayed in the Highlands where we visited many sites of particular interest to the Rosses and squeezed in a trip to Orkney.
Museum accreditation: not the most exciting work, but absolutely necessary for museums to keep up to the required standards and maintain eligibility for funding. We have helped 6 established museums to apply for accreditation and advised several developing museums on how to work towards it.
