Hello,

It is with great sadness we learn of the death of Fred Elder.

Fred has been our Life President for a number of years now.

He was a Founder Member of the original Gairloch Boat Association in 1980.

In November 1981 it was decided to form the Gairloch Boat Club.

Fred was President for seven years before becoming our Life President.

The efforts of lots of local volunteers resulted in many water-based activities amongst the local youngsters & adults, resulting in the Portacabin becoming too small.

Clearly it was time to consider the building of a purpose-built Club House.

Along with John Corbyn & others, Fred was instrumental in securing land from the Estate for building our Club House, which was officially opened in September 1990.

Having seen big improvements in other Harbours In the 1990s' Fred continued to try to secure improvements of the facilities for Fishing Boats, small boats & Yachts at Gairloch Harbour.

How's this for guts! After his accident and in a wheelchair he continued to compete in international sailing competitions.

In the future, we hope we can do Fred proud, by building even further on his legacy, particularly as we have recently achieved Charitable Status & are in the process of preparing all the transfers of assets to the Charity.

Regards, Phil, on behalf of the Committee of Gairloch Boat Club.

Latest safety notice 21 July 2020

Guidance from RYA Scotland is available on their website https://www.rya.org.uk/scotland/representation/Pages/Return-to-Boating.aspx and distils the raft of guidance documents from the Scottish Government and sportscotland into information relevant to clubs, training centres and individuals across Scotland’s boating community. They have been approved by sportscotland on behalf of the Scottish Government and I hope they prove helpful. Participants should be aware that the easing of restrictions does not mean that all facilities will open immediately.

Our priority is the safety of participants, staff and volunteers.

In order to ensure social distancing between sailors, it may be necessary to limit the numbers.

In the meantime, if individuals, with their own boat, wish to go sailing at their own risk & without any Sailing Support from the Club & without any access to the Club House, you are free to do so.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

COVID-19

The GBC Committee is anxious to keep you all as up to date as we can, concerning the Covid-19 Outbreak.

We will soon be making plans for what needs to be done to prepare the Club, once restrictions are eased. These plans will probably be on a staged basis.
