Walkerwood Trout Fishery 12/3/10

by Woz Andrew - 19:00 on 12 March 2010

I decided quite last minute to go and have a couple of hours at Walkerwood this afternoon. I'd been watching the weather out of the back window throughout the day and the wind couldn't quite make it's mind up which way it wanted to blow, and so far the forecast heavy showers had held off. I made up a flask of coffee and off I went. I popped my head in at the cabin said hello and then went up to the top end. The wind wasn't blowing as much up the top end but blew from the North East and East and South East as the afternoon went on. Occasionally catching me out on the back cast with a quick change in direction. Anyway within two or three cast's I was into my first fish a nice looking rainbow of about 2lb 8oz which took the trusty red bloodworm pattern on the point of a team of buzzers. A few hours passed before anything else showed any interest and I went through the usual change of flies and had the intermediate line out with a couple of lures. Then just after 4pm back on the floating line and team of buzzers again the line slowly tightened on a very slow retrieve and I was into my second and final fish of the day.

A cracking rainbow just under 4lb in my estimation which put up quite a good account of itself before coming to the net after a few minutes. Another rainbow to the red bloodworm pattern and a good one too. The fish which were stocked just over a fortnight ago now seem to have dispersed now and the early season fishing is back to normality. It's not easy fishing at Walkerwood and the wind plays it's part too especially during and after the wind as been blowing from an Easterly direction. For one fish tend to follow the wind and when it's from the East blowing towards the dam wall fishing can be very difficult. The fish go deep and fishing hat end of the reservoir is restricted to one or two fishable pegs and fishing isn't allowed from the dam wall itself. Float tubers would have a ball on this water when the winds blowing down and on to the dam wall. But so far no one as ventured out on to the water here at Walkerwood for the first time. I think it's time save some pennies and buy a float tube...
