This page will cover news updates on the priorities that you told us concern you. These priorities cover drug dealing and using drugs, anti social behaviour by groups of youths, burglary and traffic nuisances.
Traffic
Traffic is always a concern for residents and the types of incidents can vary from speeding drivers, inconsiderate parking around schools, and more recently cycling on the pavements.
An operation along Chesterfield Road outside the school was conducted to combat people parking on the yellow zig-zags and generally driving inconsiderately around the school. This is a daily problem and warnings were given to people who parked on the zig-zags and their registrations were noted so that if they re-offend they will be given 3 points and a fine. The operation was met with much praise from the majority of parents who are getting increasingly fed up with the selfish attitude of a minority of the parents.
We will continue to work with the schools and partners to deal with those we feel are driving/parking in an inconsiderate manner, trying out new initiatives and arrangements as well as using enforcement where appropriate.
We are targeting cyclists that tear around without regard for pedestrians and several tickets have been issued for repeat offenders that were cycling on the pavements. However, we are using discretion and common sense in enforcing this, giving a verbal warning in the first instance and being mindful of the fact that it is safer for children if they are cycling sensibly on the path. The situation has improved but we will continue to target known offenders as a means of disrupting their criminal activity and imposing fines to hit them where it hurts.

Drugs and Drug Dealing
Drugs in the form of dealers and cannabis factory growers are a major concern and over the last 6 months we have been very successful in causing considerable disruption to their activities.
We have closed a number of cannabis factories prior to it being harvested and sold on the street, which means that the cannabis is not out on our streets. This usually means that criminals have been left seriously out of pocket having invested in these operations without any return on them
A number of drug dealers have also been arrested and a recent warrant that was executed seized over £4k of drugs (cannabis) and the same amount of money was discovered. The individual was arrested and further investigation into his finances continues. There is still a long way to go with this priority and we will continue to target these harbingers of misery.
Anti Social Behaviour (ASB)
Although seemingly a minor issue, constant “low-level” antisocial behaviour over a long period of time can drive those affected to extreme measures. It could be as minor as footballs being kicked against windows to groups of youths congregating and intimidating locals and passers by or the constant noise of mopeds being driven around the local parks.
One of the main headaches during the summer last year was illegally ridden mopeds and mini-motos (very small motorbikes). The noise they make is horrendous and they pose a very real danger to those using the open spaces and parks. We’ve seized four mini-motos and have reported one individual for summons to appear before the Court for a number of offences.
We also try to talk to groups of youths and the individuals seen as key characters within these groups and explain to them that they may be seen as intimidating. Some take this advice on board, but there are always those that will enjoy causing the fear and commit crime and we will deal with these in the strongest possible way so residents and workers feel comfortable on the streets of their community. Recently PC Hathaway arrested a youth for carrying a knife and disrupted a gang intent on causing trouble.
And recently our very own PCSO’s Antony Rivas and James Oliver have also been mentioned for their determination in locating a prolific burglar who was wanted for four separate offences. They were aware that the man had been seen by other officers in the area but had lost sight of him. Using their local knowledge, they systematically checked every possible hiding place that would be used by someone very familiar to the area. Antony and James found the man as he tried to take cover in a Doctor’s surgery waiting room, pretending to be waiting for a GP’s appointment. He was discreetly escorted out of the busy surgery and successfully detained despite trying to escape, with local officers arriving and arresting him.
Police Sergeant Martin O'Donnell said: “These officers acted intuitively and professionally to catch a prolific offender that had, until now, repeatedly evaded justice.”
And only a couple of months after PCSO James Oliver began his service he remained cool and collected when he saw a man arm himself with an iron bar and began acting aggressively. James maintained visual contact with the suspect and determined from his behaviour he posed a danger to the public. Despite a limited knowledge of the area, James liaised with core response team officers who guided a marked police car to the man and promptly arrested him. Being mindful of the danger to the public and himself, James has shown great judgement and is providing a quality service within the Safer Neighbourhood Team.
