Welcome to the East Church, Cromarty

The church is in the charge of the
Scottish Redundant Churches Trust (SRCT) and was the inspiration behind the setting up of this Trust; which secures the survival of outstanding churches threatened with closure by conserving them intact as historic buildings.

Since taking ownership of the East Church in 1998 SRCT has worked tirelessly to raise the funds to carry out conservation work on the building. The plight of the church gained national fame in 2006 when the church came runner up in the
BBC ‘Restoration Village’ series.

Funding success came in 2007 when the
Heritage Lottery Fund awarded a major grant which, together with funding from Historic Scotland and The Highland Council has allowed the SRCT to appoint a preferred contractor and enter into final negotiations on contract detail and cost.

It is hoped that work will begin during 2008, and once begun, it will continue for 3 or 4 years. Throughout this time we’ll be using this website to keep you up-to-date with what is happening on site: new discoveries, tales from the craftsmen about working on the church, details of open days and workshops. In the meantime, you can brush up on the church’s history, take a look at the conservation plan for the building and find out what else
Cromarty has to offer.
