The General Register Office for Scotland is responsible for the registration of births, marriages, civil partnerships, deaths, divorces, and adoptions, runs the Census, and uses Census and other data to publish information about population and households. The main source of Scottish family history records.

Based in Edinburgh, the National Archives of Scotland (NAS) holds historical records created by businesses, landed estates, families, churches and other corporate bodies.
