Sadly today 8th September atc18 30 hours it was announced sadly that Her Majesty The Queen Elizabeth 2nd passed away aged 96 at Balmoral.

The sculpture of Khan before going to be cast at foundry with the model of Muldoon about to be completed by Sculptor John McKenna of Girvan.
The statue will eventually be placed in Strathaven Common Green with details to follow from councillor Margaret Cooper.

Saturday 18th May at Winston barracks Cameronians gather for the unveiling of 4 statues and a centre piece of the regimental badge.

My grandfather Robert McCall sadly passed away yesterday morning unexpectedly at the age of 92.

Robert served with the 6th Btn Cameronians during the final phase of WW2 as a young 18 yr old lad, arriving on the front with his twin brother George as the allies prepared to invade Germany. He could clearly remember his Sgt. Major saying to the group of young lads he arrived with ‘Jesus Christ, their sending me school boys now, if you don’t do as I say i’ll bash yer into the grooond like a tent peg’.

Robert was part of the allied invasion into north-west Germany and fought at the Battle of Alpon and on the road to Bremen. He could vividly recall the horrors of being part of the liberation of Sandbostel concentration camp.

Robert remained with the 6th during occupation of Gelsenkirchen and later served in Gibraltar.

Robert was proud to have fought for king and country and especially to have been a Cameronian.

He visited the regimental museum in Hamilton just 3 months ago, during a visit back to Glasgow, his first since he left as a 10 yr boy and we planned on bringing him to the Cameronians Day in 2019, which he would have loved to have been part of.

This is a photo of my Dad RFN Ronald MacKay (left) and RFN John Bryan 1st Battalion taken in the NAAFI in Trieste on the 3rd Sept.1949 I have no idea who John Bryan is or where he is now so hopefully someone on here will know him or his family and pass on this memory from that time.

Robert Mitchell lit a candle at the cairn to remember those who fell as do the Dutch.

Seven veterans met up in Low Parks Museum on the 2nd of December for a cuppa and a good blether.

Sadly Robert Lindsay passed away mid February, off to the big Conventicle in the sky.

Councillor Margaret Cooper: I am a local Councillor for Strathaven in South Lanarkshire and I am working on an important project for our community. We have a very famous Cameronian War Dog attached to our Community and we are working hard to put in place a statue the dog in our Town Centre. I hope your will support our project now and in the future. We plan to hold a dedication to Rifleman Khan when we install him in his rightful place in the centre of Strathaven and we hope that as many people attached to the Cameronians as possible will come along. I will keep you posted on our progress. In the meantime we are fundraising and if you feel you can support the project please make a small donation it will be much appreciated.
Remember Rifleman Khan from Strathaven who saved his handlers life. Rifleman Khan and his handler James Muldoon from Strathaven landed at the island of Walcheren in the Netherlands, as part of the Battle of the Scheldt. and Khan swam to the shore. However, his handler could not swim and was drowning. Khan ran from the beach and swam back out to into a strong current in the river to tow his hander to safety on the beach. They both survived and led a famous parade in Strathaven in 1953. Khan was awarded the highest award for bravery for a dog the Dicken Medal (Dog VC). After the war his owners allowed him to return to Strathaven to stay with James Muldoon. The money will be used to fund a statue and description plate that will be placed in a prominent place in town.

I would be very proud if you can post the article of my father on the Cameroians Website. ( You will need a translation).


I really dont have much more information about my father in WW2, I am aware that after leaving Sandhurst Military Academy, he was posted to India. From India he then was posted to Burma to fight the Japs that had invaded this country. I suppose that there he in 1941 joinded the Cameronians as 2 nd Lieutenat. In Burma he was part of the 1 st Burma Brigade in the 39 th Indian Division, so called Punjab Infantry. This Division then formed the 13 th Frontier Force Rifles in 1945, just befor the Japs surrended. Before he was sent home because of his malaria, he reach the rank of Coronel. After WW2 ended, he married Margaret Gordon in Aschford, Middlesex. her father, Albert Gordon, fougt in WW1 in France against the germans. Once married he returned to Argentina, Mendoza Province, to join the family business and raise a family. From that marriage, was born Ronald Gordon 1947 ( past away very young, but had formed a family( two boys and two girls). Then comes  me,  bonr in 1950. I also have 4 sons ( two girls and two boys) all married and with children, so we have 8 grand children, all living in Cordoba, Argentina. Just to finish, the Walker family came fron Scotland ( Aberdeen) in 1910 and settled down in Mendoza province, Argentina.

Robert Walker Gordon ( Clan Gordon from the Lowlands, Motto " Animo non Astutia" By courage, not by craft

Good morning all, as a Highland Fusilier, I am a newbie to this site ... I have come across a Cameronian Regimental item that I would be interested in getting more info on. It is a solid brass ship's bell (10" x 12" x 11") inscribed "Cameronian, Habilyan Bell, Won by Capt GAM Soper, Acquired by RQMS Andrews Aden 1966". My initial investigation has identified that Lt Col Riddell Webster (who I assume is the father of Gen Riddell-Webster (BW)) presented it, but cannot find any details of why, when, what or who Soper is and most importantly where this artefact would better lie. Does anyone recall/remember it or details on presentation?Any details appreciated . Nemo Nos Impune Lacessit.

His name was William James Hoaksey. He married my Grandma who was from Hamilton and they went on to have 6 children. 3 of them were born in India.
He was the eldest of 17 children so probably joined the regiment to get away from all the life at home. He was very proud of his career.
He had four granddaughters and I finally had a brother. He was delighted as he lost 2 sons born in India.
Earliest memories are of him having us marching around their large garden when we came for Sunday dinner and boy could he shout. Lol

I send the attached Cameronian Photo received from John at the Liberation Museum in Holland. The 6th Btn of the regiment was in Buer in 1945 (see Regimental History Vol 111, page 231) photo developed there.

The men are all named from the 6th Btn, think it was a final get together in 1945 prior to disbandment, demob or transfer to other regiments at end of the war, also think all were involved with the relief of Walcheren.  Captain A W McClure was wounded during the crossing of the Sloe 03/11/1943 were Major Mike Sixsmith father was killed,  Khan the Dog saved Rifleman Muldoon and received the Dicken medal animal VC.

Sadly one of our members Ian Forsyth passed away aged 97.
Ian wasn't a Cameronian but a Hussar who was one of first into Belsen and since has done many great deeds over his life for many causes
