Lyre of Ur lecture/recital in Canterbury

A lecture/recital with the Lyre of Ur is planned for Saturday evening 6th December.   Andy Lowings will discuss the original lyre, dating from 2600 BC, as well as the project to reconstruct an authentic performing copy.  Bill Taylor will discuss decisions made in playing this instrument, examining questions of technique, musical influences, and the performance of poetry.  The evening will include a recital of ancient mesopotamian poems set to music, featuring Jennifer Sturdy, voice, and Bill Taylor, lyre. 

The performance will take place at The Old Synagogue, King Street, Canterbury at 7.30pm. Tickets at the door: £7.50 / £5 (students and retired people). Further information: Helen Nattrass 07803 612556.  Promotion in collaboration with Music for Change.

Lyre of Ur concert in London

The Golden Lyre of Ur will be heard in a rare concert in London on Friday evening the 5th of December, starting at 7.30 pm.  The concert is held in conjunction with the Babylon exhibition, held at the British Museum, and is titled "Music from Mesopotamia and more:  Archaeological music from the great civilizations of Greece, Rome and Sumer".  Featured performers will include Bill Taylor and Jennifer Sturdy (lyre & voice), Stefan Hagel (aulos), and Susanna Rühling of Musica Romana (panpipes, drums & voice).   Bolívar Hall, part of the Venezuelan cultural complex, 56 Grafton Way.
