In January, 1929, when Betty was 11 (and three quarters!) the family went on a cruise on the maiden voyage of the "Duchess of Richmond" to Freetown via Monte Carlo, calling in at twelve different ports - probably a "shake down" voyage as a test run, for the ship was intended for the regular Liverpool to Canada run.
