Berwick signs up against Tory anti-union laws

Trades unionists gathered in Berwick town centre today to campaign for the Right to Strike. The government has put forward legislation to seriously weaken our rights at work with the Trade Union Bill.

The stall at the Saturday market was organised by the Northumberland Public Service Alliance and supported by Berwick Trades Council and local trade unionists. TUC leaflets were handed out explaining the nature of the bill. Leaflets on the impact of working tax credit changes were also handed out.

Berwick people responded positively and signed the petition opposing the legislation. It’s clear from discussions at the stall that there is serious concern over the proposed closure of the General Mills’ Jus-Rol factory. The closure of Jus-Rol would be devastating for Berwick; in fact, the impact on our small community would be just as damaging as the loss of the Steel industry is to larger communities. Berwick Trades Union Council is therefore eager to talk to workers and unions at the factory.
