May Minutes
04 July 2007

Minutes of the Bournmoor Conservation Group Meeting held                              on the 30th of May 2007.

Present;, Ken Clark (Secretary), Ian Linsley( Chairman), Paul Griffin (Treasurer), Les Leonard, Bill & Jean Waistell, Herbert Mears,
Martin Garrett, Stuart Wilkie, Russell Borthwick, Linda and Vanessa.

Apologies; Sarah Hamilton, Louise Cowell, Jacqueline Mcpake, Peter Holland and Miriam Oliver.

The minutes were accepted as a true record with the revision of pumping into the Burn was between 4pm to 7am, also second paragraph should have read Horden and not Howden.

The discharge into the Lumley Burn was again discussed in detain, this stemmed from the failure of the Horden Pumps to cope with the rising Mine water levels.
Paul is hoping to write to Natural England regarding the pollution this is causing. If we can get the stretch from the Floaters Mill Pub to the Forge, classed as a Nature Reserve it may help in the fight to improve this area.
It is hoped that funding can be sourced to enable the Clay Cap over the landfill near Woodstone to be checked.

The Large road sign at Houghton Gate has been renewed with a smaller one, members were frustrated at this waste of funds when all that was needed was some hedge trimming around the old sign.

Very little improvement has been under taken at the Church Corner from recent Gas workings, small amounts of soil have been spread around.

It was mentioned, that Durham Wildlife were holding an open day at Rainton Meadows on June the 9th.

Seating construction was discussed in and around the Plantation area. It was suggested that the artist Peter Flynn who would be doing work on Boundary features for the village may be involved in the construction of seats.
Bulk buying of mixed concrete may be the best option in the making of the seats.

Ian is hoping to raise funding for a better boundary fence for the Cricket Club and the Church.

Treasurers Report;
The bank balance stands at £1098.59
Two Hi-Vis jackets and six vests have been bought; Ian will have our logo added to these for the use of group members.

Woodlea School will be holding their annual fair on the last Saturday in June and if anyone would like to help to construct Bird Boxes at this event could they please contact Paul.
Anyone wishing to be more involved in the Bee keeping project should contact Paul via our Web site [Bees for Bio-diversity]

Paul has been informed that a new sewer pipe will be installed across the plantation from New Lambton, this will affect the Parks for Larks scheme wcich we have been trying to promote in this area. Paul will be writing to the contractors, Northumbria Water and the District Council, to have the area reinstated to an acceptable standard. This work will begin within three months.

A well attended Litter Pick on Saturday 9th of May resulted in the Plantation and woods being cleaned up.

Vanessa suggested that Lumley Burn could do with a clean up, she was informed of some of the protocol involved in this area.

Martin opened up a lengthy discussion on the problems of Plastics in our society with the recycling and reuse of this material. It was hoped to get Geoff Armstrong, our local District Councillor to take this onboard.

The whole agenda of recycling was under debate and it was felt that a special meeting on this item alone, should be held and a suggestion the Mike Kenleyside from the District Council be invited to this special meeting.

Meeting closed 8-35pm.
