Kens April Notes
30 April 2007

Kens, April Nature Notes

Well how can I describe April, it used to be a month of showery weather, hence the song “April Showers” but this one in 2007 seems to have been a very dry one.
April growth has not been stunted by all this dryness, the hedges and trees are evidence of this month. I feel April starts like some classical music, slowly and quietly, building up gently until now at the end of the month all the bells and whistles, trombones and drums celebrating the fullness of the growth. Trouble is this new growth is already requiring a trim.
Blackbirds have already had their first brood of the year and will now be frantically feeding up their chicks in readiness of the next brood.
Bluebells are now in abundance in the woods and the Plantation is a more secretive place. Gone are the skeleton trees, now that they are in full leaf.
Even the Ash trees, which are always the last to break bud, are in step with the other trees. As my dad used to tell me when I was young, “when the Ash is out no more frost about”, and I recommend this method of weather prediction to be as good a guide as any for planting out tender plants. Well at least 99% of the time!
I am doing quite well with my succession of Lettuce planting, I am about to enjoy my first honeymoon sandwich “Lettuce Alone”.
Rhubarb is about ready for turning into my favourite sweet, Rhubarb Crumble; I haven’t quite got the hang of growing the Custard to go with it yet!
Apple blossom on my family apple tree is looking fabulous, providing we get the bees to help pollination we should be in for a good harvest this year again.
Sadly the Beehive we had at the nursery developed some disease which wiped out the full colony. We have had to burn the hive to destroy any virus etc from infecting our new hive. So fingers crossed for more success this season.
The hawthorn flowers are just starting to show, this I believe is called the “may flower”, I could be wrong, it has been known. This would lead me into my next saying of “Never cast a clout till May is out” meaning the “may” blossom and not the month.
Cheers,

Ken.
