Welcome to our new website - updated November 2018

The recent "pop up events" held on Friday 9th Nov at Canolfan Beaumaris and Beaumaris Library were very useful and attracted interest!

The most interetsing story shared was of Owen Lazurus, a blacksmith from Llanbedrgoch whose gold pocket watch and other items were stolen. The thieves were caught and transported to Van Diemen's Land (Australia today). Gwyneth, who lives locally, is a descendent of Owen and will share her research with us.

Mayor Jason Zalot is going to host an "Australia Day" event on Saturday 26th January 2019 and hopes to link up with Mayor Lawrence Evans from Beaumaris, Victoria.

A copy of the award winning book written by Elizabeth Jane Corbett "The Tides Between" is now available for special loan from Beaumaris Library. Please share your comments / reviews on the book through our site Feedback

A few copies of the book are also still available for purchase - contact lizmillman@yahoo.co.uk if you are interested.

Elizabeth has spent the summer in Wales, speaking at the National Eistedfod and undertaking research for her next book.

The next opportunity to meet up to chat with Liz in Beaumaris, Anglesey, may be in Spring 2019 when Liz is back from her trip over to spend time with her family in Melbourne.

However the Australia Links "pop up events" organised in Beaumaris or Anglesea will be shared here.

How are we reviving the Beaumaris / Beaumaris links?

Liz Millman travels back and forth between Melbourne and Anglesey, and is interested in the shared histories between communities here and there, so she is building up links with those who share an interest in Wales and Australia!

Reviving the link has support from the Mayor's in both Beaumaris's, but not as a formal Civic Twinning, rather an informal frinedship link.

See Research in Beaumaris, Victoria.

The Open Day in Beaumaris Town Hall on Mon 16th July went well and the Mayor and Mayoress of Beaumaris came along and children from Ysgol Beaumaris sang beautifully!

Liz was also at Jolly's Cafe in Castle Street on Friday 8th June from 10.30am to catch up with folks interested.

Both Beaumaris Town Council and the City of Bayside Council are supportive of the revival of links between Beaumaris and Beaumaris. Formal letters are being exchanged.

Thanks from Liz to the folks who kept the monthly Coffee Mornings going!

The idea of exploring current interest in links between Australia and North Wales came about through the idea of revitalising the Beaumaris, Anglesey / Beaumaris, Victoria link that was originally set up in 2000.

It also seemed possible to link Anglesey with Anglesea, also in Victoria, so we have decided to leave it open to any links between North Wales and Australia, or even Wales and Australia, but we are based in Beaumaris, Anglesey.

Liz Millman, who set up and manages a social enterprise called "Learning Links International" started to explore if there was any local interest in North Wales for develop "Australia Links". Liz travels and splits her time between Australia to be with her family, and North Wales where her family roots are.

Beaumaris Town Council is interested in reviving the link, although it turns out this will be a less formal link than before: see Beaumaris / Beaumaris, so the first step was a celebration of Australia Day on 26th January 2018 held at Beaumaris Town Hall.

Pat, from Beaumaris, Anglesey, has a friend called Pat living in Beaumaris, Victoria, and she will keep to interest going in Beaumaris, Anglesey, while Liz links up with Pat in Beaumaris, Victoria.

As a Rotarian, Liz has made a link with Beaumaris Rotary Club in Victoria and will attend their meetings. She is a member of Bangor Rotary Club which covers the Beaumaris and Menai Bridge areas in Anglesey.
