About Michael Scott

Michael Scott B.Sc., O.B.E. has a degree in Botany from the University of Aberdeen, and wild flowers remain his particular interest, especially those of the Scottish mountains, the Alps and the Arctic.

But his interests have always been much wider: he developed his interest in wildlife visiting Edinburgh Zoo as a child, and he worked in the education unit of the zoo and for what was then the World Wildlife Fund, before going freelance in 1980.

Since then, amongst other things, he was been part-time Scottish Officer of Plantlife, the Wild Plant Conservation Charity, Chairman of Scottish Wildlife & Countryside Link, and Deputy Chairman of Scottish Natural Heritage, whilst continuing to work also as a writer, broadcaster and natural heritage consultant. For more information, visit his website here.

In the 1980s, Michael ran his own study tours around Scotland and to the Arctic, Algarve and Cyprus, in association with the University of Edinburgh. More recently, he and wife Sue have begun working as a lecturers on cruise ships, and this has taken them around the UK, to Norway, Iceland, Greenland, the Caribbean and up the Amazon, with a trip to Spitsbergen booked for summer 2008.

As a photographer, wild flowers remain Michael's particular passion, and the downloadable library being developed for this website will offer a wide range of images from the many sites that Michael has visited around the world ~ and the many more that he still plans to visit, as and when his other work commitments allow him.

He was awarded an OBE in 2005 "for services to biodiversity conservation in Scotland", and was honoured to receive the Planta Europa Silver Leaf Award in 2007 for his work in European wild plant conservation (photo right, copyright Peter Skoberne).
