Take the second exit onto Wartling Road (you will see the Herstmonceux Castle signs) and continue for 3.50 miles, passing through Wartling, until reaching the entrance to the castle. Turn left and follow the driveway down through the castle grounds for 0.50 miles, until reaching the visitors car park opposite the castle itself.
STAGE 2 HERSTMONCEUX CASTLE TO BATTLE
8.70 miles ......... 15 - 20 minutes. Turn left out of the castle entrance onto Wartling Road, and follow this for 1.00 mile until reaching the A271 junction. Turn right and continue through Boreham Street; after 1.50 miles bear left (still on the A271) and follow this for 5.50 miles to Battle. On reaching Battle, go straight over the small roundabout into the High Street. Then take the first main left turn Mount Street, followed by an almost immediate right turn into the car park. The overflow car park, which is the Stage 3 HQ, is in the bottom left hand corner. The Stage 2 finish outside Battle Abbey is 2 mins jog away, as is Battle Memorial Hall in the High Street which is open from 10.00am to 12 noon; this has toilet and changing facilities, drinks and cakes.
STAGE 3 BATTLE TO KENT STREET
5.00 miles .......... 10 - 12 minutes. Turn right out of the car park into Mount Street, which soon becomes Whatlington Road, and follow this for 2.00 miles until turning into Riccards Lane on the right which leads up to the A21. Take care doing a right turn onto the A21 (good clutch control needed here!), and continue for 2.50 miles before turning right into Sedlescombe Golf Club at Kent Street. The entrance is just beyond a series of 50mph speed limit signs. If you are picking up the Stage 3 runner, or dropping off a car, then bear right and continue for 600 yds before parking as directed in the overflow car park. If you are just dropping off the Stage 4 runner, then please pull in on the left hand side by the Stage 4 registration sign. After you have dropped the runner off, then continue towards the golf club and turn round in the overflow car park. Don't try and do a U-turn near the entrance to the golf club, as this will be busy on a Sunday morning!
STAGE 4 KENT STREET TO ICKLESHAM
8.50 miles ........ 15 - 20 minutes. Take care turning right out of the golf club entrance onto the A21, as traffic is usually fast moving in both directions here! Continue towards Hastings for 2.00 miles, before turning left onto the A28 Westfield Lane and follow this for 2.00 miles into Westfield. Turn right at the first main crossroads (The Old Courthouse pub is on the left) into Moor Lane, following the signs for Three Oaks and Guestling. After 1.50 miles you will reach a T-junction; turn left here and follow the road through Three Oaks to another T-junction. Turn left onto the A259 and follow this for 2.00 miles into Icklesham. Turn right just after the bus-stop lay-by (also on the right) into the village recreation ground car park. Stage 5 starts next to the village hall in Workhouse Lane at 11.50 - 11.55am. If you want to watch the runners finishing Stage 4 between 11.30am - 12.10pm, then cross the A259 into Parsonage Lane (opposite Workhouse Lane) and the finish is 100 yds further along the lane in the front car park of The Queen's Head pub.
STAGE 5 ICKLESHAM TO RYE
5.00 miles ...........10 - 15 minutes. Turn right out of the recreation ground car park onto the A259 - take care as the visibility on your right is limited by the bend! Continue on the A259, bypassing Winchelsea, for 4.50 miles until reaching the small roundabout by the Kettle of Fish approaching Rye. Continue straight ahead, bearing left as you soon enter the town's one way system. Keep left and go over the level crossing onto the B2089 Udimore Road; continue for 350 yds before turning left into Gibbet Marsh car park which is the stage and race finish. Please try and avoid using the car park if possible whilst the Stage 5 runners are arriving between 12.25 - 12.55pm. There is a public car park behind the Kettle of Fish; and there is also free parking on Sundays at Budgens/Jempsons (bear right at the one way system and the supermarket is immediately on your right). You can also park in the British Rail car park opposite the supermarket; additionally there is parking in Rope Walk ( much cheaper than BR!) which you can access by following the one way system into Cinque Ports Street and then turning left at the mini-roundabout.
